API access for safer chats and feeds
A safer interface is useful only if it has lawful access and can enforce the intended controls.
The routes available
| Route | Opportunity | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded SDK | Deep controls in a participating provider’s product. | Requires integration and coverage testing. |
| Partner API | Settings, permissions and authorised content access. | Depends on actual endpoints and contractual rights. |
| Guardian-tool interoperability | Specific prospective hook in KIDS Article 20(5). | Not a general raw-message or feed-access right. |
| DMA messaging interoperability | A separate route for qualifying messaging providers and designated services. | Not a general social-feed API or universal chat archive. |
| Device-local analysis | Processing on a supported endpoint can reduce disclosure. | Does not override OS restrictions, encryption or other people’s rights. |
A feed designed for deliberate use
A participating platform could offer finite content batches, explicit subscriptions, a non-profiling mode, quiet hours, a reset and real stopping points. These controls support deliberate use and meaningful stopping points.
The platform should enforce the same policy in its backend and other clients. Otherwise an alternative interface merely changes the surface while unsafe controls remain available elsewhere.
A contact-first approach to chat safety
Prioritise who may contact a child, how invitations work, and how to block or report. Content analysis is a separate decision requiring a lawful basis, minimisation, communications-law review and protection of other participants.
No age proof can establish that a person is trustworthy. No classifier can guarantee detection of grooming. Preserve encryption and provide human review for significant decisions.
Interoperable parental controls
Valvur advocates an open control interface for scoped settings, contact approval, time limits, revocation and complaints. It should include strong authentication, minimal permissions, accessible design and conformance tests.
Broader feed or message access should be separately justified. It may require provider agreement, a distinct legal entitlement or legislative change.
